Beyond What We Were

“Beyond What We Were” is a piece about the City of Phoenix and it’s expansion through human connection and integration. Park Central Mall, originally built in 1957, was the first ever shopping mall in Phoenix. Having a site to work with that was so rich in history made it easier to conceptualize a piece that was focused on respect for the past, while also being hopeful for the future. The original 9 villages of Phoenix (plus two unplanned A & B agricultural lands) that were planned in 1979 are portrayed by the dark shapes that serve as a focal point for the piece. The surrounding linework and bright colors represent the idea of expansion and human connection that draws itself out of what once was. Geographically, the entire piece is centered on one main focal point, which defines the location of Park Central Mall within these villages. Phoenix is a wonderfully resilient city with incredible people and we’ve seen some real change over the last few years, which I think is really exciting and I’m so very humbled and thankful that I get to be a little part of it with this wall.
